Choker Chains, when used correctly can be an invaluable training aid.
The bad press they have received is down to the fact that many people do not use them correctly. Choker Chains can be dangerous if abused. The same, however, goes for a conventional collar and lead arrangement.
There are a few important factors that must be kept in mind when using a choker or check chain. Used sensibly they can aid greatly in training your Dog to heel. They are a very quick way to teach your Dog to stop pulling on the leash and improve your Dogs behaviour on walks.
Using A Choker Chain Correctly
Never leave the chain on when not on a walk. It could be very dangerous if your Dog got it caught and you were not there.
Do not use continual tension. A short "snap" is what is needed and a call to "heel". Not constant tension so your Dog has difficulty breathing.
Keep it short. The chain should be very short so your Dog cannot use its weight against you and pull against the chain.
Act responsibly. Be aware that the check chain is a very powerful training aid. Just make sure you are not abusing the power of the chain.
Keep to your commands. You must always use the same commands for the desired action. Use them every single time. Don't forget and simply pull on the chain. Your Dog will get confused.
Bear all the above in mind when using a Choker Chain to train your Dog. Used correctly you will find it a much better way to train your Dog than a normal collar and lead.
