Dog Training - Keys To Bringing Up An Obedient Dog

The tip in transforming that charming puppy into an obedient dog the whole family will love is proper techniques. Like children, dogs need to know the house rules and will need to respect the power of their owners.

Many new pet owners fall in love with the cute, scruffy face at the breeders, only to be disillusioned and frustrated when that adorable ball of fluff chews up the furniture or makes messes on the carpet. While all puppies will find their share of trouble, a responsible dog owner will utilize plenty of time and patience to raise that pup into a well behaved dog that is a joy to all. This article will provide some basics to help you and your puppy develop a happy relationship.

Making The Rules

First thing you need to do is create the household rules and begin right away as this will result to a more successful training. So if you do not want your seventy pound Golden retriever jumping up on your bed at night, neither should your little puppy. Not even once.

As it is never too late to get a puppy, it is also never too early to train your puppy to stay away from your furniture or to steer clear from jumping on your guests. You have to make sure that your entire family understands that when the puppy gets home, they should be prepared to enforce the rules that you created for your dog to follow.

Being Consistent

Once the rules have been set, it will be up to you to maintain consistency in enforcing them. Every time your puppy breaks a house rule, he should be reprimanded with a sharp "No!" and shown the proper behavior.

This applies to all aspects of dog training, such as house breaking and chewing on his toys instead of your shoes. Just like kids, dogs will learn the rules quickest when they are enforced without fail. The problem is that consistency takes time and plenty of patience on the part of the dog owner. However, good, consistent at the beginning will save time, effort " and your shoes " in the long run.

Positive Rewards

When your dog follows the rule effectively, always reward him for his good behavior. To produce your desired results in dog training, use more of the positive reinforcement more often than using punishments. At the start of the process, you might want to use edible treats as rewards. As soon as your dog gets the hand of the process, you can then opt to praising and giving positive attention when your dog obeys your commands. Providing positive reinforcement consistently will make your puppy learn that it is to his benefit to listen and obey your command.

Dog training is not complicated. But for you to have a positive result, you will need to exert patience, time and consistency in the process. Always remember though that after all the effort and time, everything will be worth it especially when you see your family enjoying the company of your dog.
