Crate training a dog is a way of training your dog and also keeps him secure while you are out. There are good ways to go about the process, and there are better ways to crate train a dog. With a little forethought and training, your dog can be very happy to hang out in his little hut while you take care of business.
Think about how large you dog is likely to grow when you first consider the size of your crate. Too small equals an anxious miserable pet. You have to think how big your dog might get and dont buy a crate that seems ok but means that your dog looks like the incredible hulk in an ill fitting suit when he is full grown.
Give him some time to get used to the idea. He is being asked to look at things differently and he is likely to be anxious so you may think about sitting with him and giving him comfort at first.
He should be able to stand up, move around, and get comfortable in his crate. Usually, if he has an inch or two above his head and several inches on either side of his tail and head when lying down, the crate is large enough. Go bigger rather than smaller.
You will find it best if you take some time to sit with him when you forst get the crate as he will need to get used to it. Eventually, give him a treat for going in and another one when you close the door and sit outside the crate.Once he has done that, give him a little time in it then open the door.
Furthermore, think about your plan before you start. Your dog will not like it initially whether he is a puppy or a grown up. He will make a fuss and you think he might be leaving home next time he is out. He's not. He just wants to be wherever you are and is voicing his opinion about the whole thing. If you let him out of the crate while he is fussing you will never get him to stop his fussing.
Included in this are the times when you get home or you first get up.Make sure he is quiet for a short time before you let him out. If he thinks that by creating a noise, you will give in and let him out you will never crate train a dog.
Toys in the crate are questionable. Some people say give them something to keep them occupied, which makes sense. However, you have to make sure you are not leaving him alone with a choking hazard. Rawhides in the crate are a really bad idea as these are the number one choking toy on the market. Some dogs destroy anyhting they can lay their paws on and can swallow small things that migth cause them to choke. Other dogs are good little chewers and don't destroy any of their toys. Accidents can happen and you will have to know your dog and what's in their best interest before making this decision
Done correctly you can crate train a dog safely and relatively easily if you get some training yourself and I would recommend that you look at some of the online guides for this and other methods of crate training a dog.
