Both the smooth and rough coated Collie share the same even temperament and ability to learn. Never a dog to go out of his way to seek trouble, this dog meets trouble when and as it comes in a most capable manner. Up to a certain point he seems actually to ignore trouble...to hold himself above such things. His nature is affectionate, making him an excellent dog for children, and with all of his size, he displays grace and consideration, comporting himself in the presence of children with the same care that is sometimes associated with walking on eggs. Few dogs can be trained as easily as the Collie, provided the trainer displays an average understanding of dogs generally.
The Collie's talent for learning quickly has made him one of the most useful dogs that man has ever trained. This dogs skill in sheepherding is widely known, but he has proved himself versatile enough to master and work that requires quick wits and strength. As a hunter, he has been rightly praised for his adept stalking of deer. In police work, he has again and again shown himself to be a rugged and reliable police dog. Obedience and a muscular frame, built up over the many years of sheepherding, make him innately suited for police work. The movies that celebrate Lassie's feats of wartime bravery are not far from fact. Collie's were used in great numbers during the war by all the armed forces.
Perhaps most important to you is the fact that the Collie has that happy combination of strength, intelligence and affection that makes him the ideal dog for children. The popularity of the Collie testifies to his love for children. A better test is simply to ask your child if the Collie is the dog he would like most. He is sure to answer "yes".
