Dogs are an instinctively aggressive animal. In nature, aggression would be extremely handy for dogs. Dogs must have aggression to hunt, to defend their food, to acquire a mate, etc...
However this doesn't mean that we must be helpless in the aspect of training our dogs. There are steps we can take to stop aggression from rearing ugly head.
One particular form of dog aggression is the aggression directed at unfamiliar faces. The method of getting your dog use to the city and it's strange people is known as "socialization". This is a very important section of training your dog. It involves exposing her from a young age to a wide variety of happenings, people, and new animals.
When you socialize your dog, you're getting him to understand through experience that unfamiliar sights and sounds will be fun, rather than bad. To socialize your dog should be more of a general lifestyle than a specific training technique. This involves just using more time handling your dog away from the dogs home.
A dog that is aggressive towards members of their family must be trained in a different way. A dog that is aggressive towards members of their family shows that the dog is defending a thought up danger (you). Or, it isn't comfortable with the handling it is receiving from it's surroundings. This can be called "resource guarding".
Resource guarding is common amongst dogs. It references overly-possessive behavior traits exhibited by your dog. Resource guarding is a old method of dominance. If a dog viewed itself as lowest in the pack hierarchy, it would not consider exhibiting aggressive or dominant behavior traits directed towards a higher ranked member of the pack.
The best training method for aggressive/dominant dog behavior is steady, frequent obedience training. That can bold-en your rank above the dog. Make obedience training sessions quick and meaningful. No horse-playing and no misbehavior.
Dogs show aggression for a reason. It can be important to move slow with a dog's obedience/aggression training. For complete information on handling aggressive dog behavior, handling disobedient dog behavior, in addition to all other and care problems it is important to obtain a high-quality book to train your dog properly.
The article above is a good start to proper dog training, but a complete guidebook is necessary to achieve professional results. The author suggests a thorough dog training resource like the ones found at www.DogTrainerPro.info |
