One of the toughest things dog trainers have to do is getting their dog to stay because staying still is simply not in a dog’s nature. The stay command seems simple but it can be extremely challenging at times. The stay command is a crucial not only for show dogs, but for everyday dog owners so how do you teach your dog to stay in the same spot for any length of time?
Well ... dogs are no different from children; they keep on testing the surroundings. People do get disarmed by the charm of the cute eyes of a dog, but you have to put your foot down and be stern to make the dog obey. Every time the dog attempts to move after you give the stay command, it has to be corrected. Having a dog that does not stay when told to is seen as a major embarrassment in the dog show world.
As was mentioned above, Dogs just do not like to stay still, this fact is both a negative and a positive at the same time. It is a negative because it makes it difficult to train your dog to stay still, but it is a positive because it can be harness as a reward. Treats are a one way to reward your dog for staying still as well as letting it run.
Dog agility training has some major benefits for both owners and their dogs, regardless if they are show or family dogs. Lack of sufficient exercise is always conducive to bad behavior on the part of dogs. By agility training a dog gets its required quota of exercise, and by walking it out, its master also gets the exercise he needs. However, the master does not have to keep running with the dogs, and actually agility training could be better suited for people who cannot manage sufficient outdoor exercise, as it is not the master but the dog that has to run.
As I myself own a dog, I know for sure that giving agility training to the dog is more interesting than taking it for a mere walk. It is a fun way to bond with your pooch and knowing that you will get to watch it run around with joy, doing what they naturally do is much more motivating than the thought of being pulled around town by an under exercised over excited companion.
When all is said and done, it is good to use agility training as a starting point in dog training, whether you are doing the job professionally or just as the owner of a lovely pooch.
