One of the first things you do when setting up a new website is to think of a company name and then try and register a suitable domain name. There is some debate about the importance of a domain name when it comes to ranking for keywords in Google or Yahoo. Some people say it is very important, other say the opposite, so what is the truth? Well its actually somewhere in between.

If you want evidence then do a search for "fort augustus" on Google and you will see the site fortaugustus.net. If you look at the links to this site you will see it has very few inbound links, yet it achieves a T10 rank in Google and is no2 on Yahoo. Yahoo is especially weighted to keyword rich domains, do a search for "Orkney accommodation" and take a look at the Top 10. Notice anything most of the sites have in common? That's right the words "Orkney accommodation" in the domains.
So what does this mean that all you do is get a keyword rich domain and that's it? Well no, but it does give you a great start and advantage over your competition, at least for low competitive keywords.
Now of course there are times when a keyword rich domain is not suitable, for example when you are trying to build a brand. You sometimes want a domain that's easy for people to remember or a specific brand name. For these situations its not all about having your keywords, Amazon is the best example of this.
When it comes to competitive keywords, its hard to say what difference a keyword rich domain makes. But it will give at least some benefit although getting it to rank will require a great deal more effort. It also means when you get a url link then you will have your keywords in the link. It also does give you a bit of a head start on the competition.
Of course you cant always get those coveted rich domains, but if you even have part of your keyword in your domain it can help (ie Rooms in Scotland, has "Scotland").
There is of course a limit to how many keywords you can use in a domain, I would note recommend anything over a 3 word phrase (hotels in Dublin for example). If you do then it starts to look spammy to search engines.
As for the argument for .net and .org extensions against .com and .co.uk, I would say as a ranking factor they are all equal. But as a brand building factor it is always better to have the .com or .co.uk as that is the domain that most people associate with a website.
