Top 8 Online Copywriting Mistakes
By Pure Ink Creative
1. Too many keywords

Don't make your keywords too obvious. If you're optimising a page on your website for a particular keyword then don't overload the copy with it. Your main focus should be creating relevant and engaging content and your target keyword should feature naturally within the text.

2. Lifeless copy

Online copywriting (and all copywriting) should be entertaining - otherwise what's the point? No one is going to read copy if it's not engaging or interesting to them. This is especially true with online copywriting as people won't waste time wading through pages of dull or irrelevant content - they will visit your competitors instead.

3. Poor content

Regularly adding content to your website is a good idea, as long as it's quality content. If you're paying someone a measly

£5 per article then this is unlikely to be quality content regardless of if it's written by an 'expert'. If you're investing in the skills of an online copywriter to add content to your website then ask for examples or arrange to meet them so you know you're getting a good deal before you buy.

4. Your life story

The About Us page features in one form or another on many websites and it is a great place to let your visitors find out about the real people behind the website. People are busy and if they take the time to get to know you then don't waste this opportunity by telling them every single detail about your company history. Keep it chatty, fresh and relevant to your visitors.

5. Spelling and grammar mistakes

It's easily done - a rouge apostrophe here, a spelling error there - but no one reads properly online right? While it's true that people tend to skim read online this doesn't mean that they won't spot a mistake in your copy. Spelling and grammar errors can make your website look unprofessional or difficult to read. Proofread everything before you upload it to your website. Better still, ask someone else to double check it for you.

6. Saying too much

Short website copy which is to the point is much more effective than pages and pages of rambling content which can end up confusing or boring your visitors. You don't have long to impress your visitors so make sure you get them with the first sentence and make them read on.

7. Not saying enough

While it's important to keep your copy concise and to the point, there's always the danger of going too far and missing key information out. People use the internet to find information so if you're not saying enough then your visitors may go elsewhere to find what they need. By not having enough key points in your copy, you're unlikely to cover all the features and most importantly the benefits your website can offer your visitors.

8. Duplicate content

Online copywriting is hard work which is the main reason why many people out source it. If you want to save money on outsourcing your copywriting then it could be tempting to use copy which already exists and duplicate this on your website. Even if you have permission from the original author to use this content, having the same copy which features elsewhere on the internet means you're not offering your visitors anything new. Using duplicate content can also have a negative effect on your website's ranking.
